“Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
the beauty of this verse is so great and yet so many of us take it out of context. as I sat down today with a beautiful friend Michelle, this verse came up. this verse can mean many things for many people but what is the truth that stands behind it? I can of course only explain my own heart towards it, write down my oppion and the revelation I feel I have gotten from reading this passage.
Many of us may try to justify why the Lord will come through with our hearts plans with this passage. Saying that our desires are good, we of course love the Lord so He will grant me these things. I don’t believe that that is the context in which this passage stands, I see it as-when we are mature followers of Christ, living a life of obedience and faith, centering our lives around Him – our heart’s desire will soon immerge into His will and when doing so, our desires are His desires. We long to serve and honour Him and apart from Him we realize we are nothing “I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” Psalm 16:2
We should also take Psalm 37 for what is fully is not just one passage:
“Trust in the Lord and do good;dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.Commit your way to the Lord;trust in him and he will do this:He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.” Psalm 37:3-6
For the Lord to bless us through our choices, it must be within His will-for the Lord is good and I belive He would not bless anything that is not of His Kingdom or honouring to Him. If your heart’s desire is something outside the Kingdom Principles, I believe they are not apart of the Lord’s desire for you. Such as having sex outside of marriage and asking the Lord to bless your relationship or asking the Lord to help you cheat on a test.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
All good things come from the Lord, the Lord gives all good things-He is never changing and the same as yesterday, today and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8) His truths stand on an unshakable foundation and we must abide by Him if we desire our lives to glorify Him.
What is your hearts desire? what do you desire to do with the life you have? through whatever that may be wether snowboarding, drawing, owning a business do you desire to bring the Kingdom into it? do you desire to grow those dreams to glorify the Lord in some way or the other?
The Lord doesn’t look at the deeds done but at the state in which our heart’s were when doing them.
“Nothing in all the world can be hidden from God. Everything is clear and lies open before him, and to him we must explain the way we have lived.” Hebrews 4:13
Are your desires honouring to the Lord? Do you see places in your heart that need to be evaluated and changed?
There is nothing wrong at all with wanting out heart’s desire fulfilled, for I believe the Lord truly wants us to be happy, to do that which we find joy out of doing-but through those giftings and things we so desire to do, may the Lord be in the midst of those things and be the one we are doing them for.
“Heavenly Father, I thank you that you are a God who desires us to live our lives to the fullest and I pray from this life that we may live them to bring you the honour and glory you so rightly deserve. That our hearts would have you at the center and as we seek you-we may find you, that our lives will mesh into your will and our desires will become your desires. For in you of Lord is our hope of Glory. In your name we give you the praise you deserve.”
